The Richest Man in the World
Not everyone grew up with a supportive, healthy Father. For reasons I will never understand, I did.
Beyond being grateful for my Dad, I'm additionally grateful that I understand this.
I'm incredibly fortunate that still he's alive and well - I actively seek his counsel nearly 50 years old.
His father died in 1948 and when my Dad was just 7…and sadly he never really knew him.
As a divorced Dad my own “fathering” of four radical humans was called out, and eventually (and thankfully), up.
There's no hiding when your spouse is no longer in the home to bear the brunt of your inadequacies as a Dad…I was fully exposed.
And man did I screw it up so many times! Likely sometimes still…
And what a gift. Genuinely.
Most of the hardest things we face in life eventually become just that, if we're lucky enough to see it.
My kids were ages 11-17 when their parents divorced, now they're adults 18-25…
And have been some of my greatest teachers.
On August 2 I will marry my fiance Jen and my world will be multiplied with three incredible bonus kids… #compoundinterest
One of my favorite Artists of all time, Ben Rector, has a song called “The Richest Man in The World”….
"When I get to heaven
And we're lined up outside the pearly gates
While we're all walking, small talking, mingling
I already know what I'm gonna say
When we all trade stories
Of what we did with our lives
I won't say that I played music or could sing
When it's my turn I think I'll smile
[Chorus]
Say I was…The richest man in the world
Father to a baby girl
And two boys that I know loved me
Was famous to a few good friends
And beside me till the end
Was my wife who is so lovely
And I don't know who could ask for any more
I'm the richest man in thе world
The richest man in the world"
Listen to the whole thing here.
Life is fragile. And short. And unpredictable. Sometimes so sweet, and others a lot less so..
May we soak it up…do our best to be present…and never wish for someone else's.
We might just miss out on the richness of our own!
Happy Father's Day friends,
