(Skip to our Ironman finale show HERE.)

The cannons. The palpable nervous energy of 2800 athletes (including some serious last minute porta-potty stops πŸš½)…

The electric anticipation as thousands of wetsuit-clad bodies hover at the edge of Sand Hollow, about to embark on one of life's true physical tests.

But after 15 years of grueling triathlons transforming our sleepy desert town into an international sporting mecca, the Ironman St. George event is taking its final bow this Saturday.

I've been there since day one in 2010, watching this event evolve from curiosity to controversy.

Many locals grumble about the traffic, the disruption, the mayhem. And look, I get it.

If your only experience with Ironman is sitting in your car, fuming because you can't make a left turn for 20 minutes... you're missing the magic.

You haven't felt the collective gasp as the cannon fires and swimmers charge into the sunrise-painted waters…

You haven't witnessed the poetry of thousands of bikes gliding through red rock canyons…

You haven't experienced the raw human emotion at Town Square as athletes transition from bike to run, their faces telling stories of suffering and determination that words simply can't capture.

And the finish line? That's where the electricity lives. As competitors stumble, sprint, or sometimes crawl down Main Street, completing what most of us couldn't fathom attempting.

This week on the St. George Real Estate Morning Drive, I sat down with my good friend and 15-year volunteer director Colby "Baggs" Nielson to reminisce about an event that has become part of our community's DNA.

I'll be at the swim start Saturday morning, then directing the bike-to-run transition volunteers at Town Square.

Want to be part of history? There's still time to volunteer: https://ironman.greaterzion.com/
