A Local's Guide to Southern Utah High Schools

One of the most common questions we hear from families moving to Southern Utah is simple: "What school will my kids go to?" Between rapid growth in Washington County and a handful of specialty and charter options, there's more to the local school landscape than most newcomers expect. Here's a rundown of the high schools around the St. George area, plus what makes each one distinct.

Washington County School District High Schools

Washington County School District serves St. George and the surrounding communities, and its high schools compete together in Region 9, home to some of the most spirited rivalries in Southern Utah sports.

  • Dixie High School (St. George) — The Flyers. One of the original, most storied high schools in the area, located in central St. George near downtown.
  • Pine View High School (St. George) — The Panthers. Opened in 1983 as the second high school in St. George, serving the east side of the city near the Mill Creek area.
  • Snow Canyon High School (St. George) — The Warriors. Located on the north side of town near Lava Flow Drive, close to Snow Canyon State Park.
  • Desert Hills High School (St. George) — The Thunder. The newest of the original St. George public high schools, serving the southeastern part of the city.
  • Crimson Cliffs High School (Washington) — The Mustangs. One of the newer additions to the district, built to serve the growing Washington City area and reflecting just how fast this region continues to expand.
  • Hurricane High School (Hurricane) — The Tigers. Serving Hurricane, La Verkin, and the surrounding communities east of St. George.
  • Millcreek High School (St. George) — Located on Riverside Drive, offering an alternative educational path for students in the district.
  • Enterprise High School (Enterprise) — Serving the more rural western part of the county, this school also includes 7th grade students under the district's structure.
  • Water Canyon High School (Hildale) — A smaller school serving the Hildale/Colorado City area in the far southwest corner of the county.

Specialty and Charter Options

Families looking for something beyond the traditional district high school have a few notable choices in the area:

  • Tuacahn High School for the Arts (Ivins) — A public charter school built around the performing arts, located adjacent to the Tuacahn Amphitheatre. Students here get a unique blend of academics and professional-caliber arts training.
  • Utah Arts Academy (St. George) — A charter school with a strong focus on visual and performing arts within a smaller school environment.
  • St. George Academy — A tuition-free charter high school offering a college-preparatory track.
  • Freedom Preparatory Academy — A K-12 charter option in the area for families seeking a smaller, community-style setting.

A Note on Iron County

If you're looking a bit further north toward Cedar City, Iron County School District has its own strong high schools, including Cedar High School (the Reds) and Canyon View High School (the Falcons), both of which face off against Washington County schools regularly in Region 9 athletics.

Choosing the Right Fit

Southern Utah's growth has meant new schools popping up to keep pace with new neighborhoods, so it's worth checking current school boundary maps before buying, since attendance zones can shift as the district grows. Test scores, extracurriculars, and specialty programs (like Tuacahn's arts focus) vary meaningfully from school to school, so it's worth a visit or a conversation with the district if a particular program matters to your family.
